NEW ZEALAND SIGN LANGUAGE INTERPRETED PERFORMANCES
These shows are aimed at people who are deaf or hearing impaired. Trained interpreters, usually situated to the side of the stage, interpret the script during the performance using New Zealand Sign Language.
AUDIO DESCRIPTION
Audio Description captures the visual elements of a theatre piece that a blind or vision impaired person might otherwise miss and describes them in clear and vivid language.
Trained audio describers provide a live, objective and succinct description of the action and visual elements of the play, which is heard by patrons through an earpiece attached to a pocket-sized ratio. Introductory notes (where available) are read prior to the performance which includes a description of set, props, costumes and characters.
INTRODUCTORY NOTES
Written introductory notes are notes provided prior to the show in accessible formats (electronic structured word document, large print) that give a description of the visual aspects of the show. These may be appropriate for shows that are largely dialogue driven where audio description is not required but some additional information would help blind and vision impaired audience members to visualize the set, lighting and costumes and aid understanding of the story.
TOUCH TOURS
Before or after the audio described performance, patrons can walk through the set, touch set pieces, feel the costumes and handle key props. Tour group sizes are strictly limited and must be booked in advance.
